ANGTORIA "God Has a Plan For Us All" In recent times, it would seem that should the words “symphonic” and “female singer” come up in the same band's description, comparisons to Nightwish are unavoidable. I'll not waste time with that narrow minded crap, but still the British Angtoria don't come out unscathed from those comparisons. Still, once you start to hear the sumptuous “God Has a Plan For Us All” you will notice they're on a whole different league. If you don't, I pity you sir, for you lack what it takes to enjoy this work for what it is in itself. With Sara Jezebel Deva(Cradle of Filth, ex-Therion e ex-The Gathering) as lead singer, Angtoria brings us with this excellent debut a sumptuous masterpiece of symphonic metal that tries hard to evade clichés. With rich orchestrations and a lot of bombastic moments, the abum comes through more symphonic than metal and still has enough guitars to appeal to those that think that a musica can only be called “metal” if it has guitars (I, for example.). And thus, in comparison to other bands, that have some symphonic hints here and there, Angtoria 's work is symphonic from top to bottom, actually being fully orchestral. With that in mind, any comparisons are possible, only if taken with a bit of salt. The compositions do enter our ear, but in a peculiar way. They are not particularly melodic or catchy, but when details reveal themselves, there is something great that stays in your head, which is the same as saying the songs are not only well built but also intelligent, albeit nor particularly easy. But for those who are patient, the reward is immense. Like with “ Original Sin” where some glorious crescendos pull us inside the album, showing the dark grandeur of the ideas forming the structure of the music, this song presenting us with some well placed grunts that don't abound in the rest of the album. The later remains dramatic and intense, from the beginning of the imposing “I Am Calling” to the delicious and moving ending with “That's What The Wise Lady Said” , ethereal song that shows that within the mournful there is still space for profound beauty, between delicious piano passages and a beautiful guitar solo. Effectively, this is a darker work than what is offered by the competition. The story is not happy and Sarah does clearly express the most disturbing emotions that haunt the lyrics (some say she lacks emotion… listen properly.). In “ God Has a Plan For Us All” or “Six Feet Under's Not Deep Enough” and “Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned ” there's nothing nice to be heard and Sarah does not disappoint. In her role, Sarah Jezebel, besides being emotional as previously referred, surprises us for not pulling out her operatic credits that she so well shows with Therion or Cradle , opting for a clean and normal tone, thus escaping the clichés of the genre and her own history as a support singer who now shows she can stand a full album. Thus far, Angtoria are well placed as candidates for revelations of the year and God Has a Plan For Us All is a very solid debut, capable of fighting for a place among the highlights of the year while escaping the comparisons that some unimaginative mind decides to pull out of it's hat, and they do offer us something quite suis generic. To finalize, a word about the cover: beautiful. At the same time sensual and disturbing, with intense visuals. Its usually said that you can't judge a book by it's cover, but in Angtoria's case, the curtains do match the drapes. Rate: 8.5 / 10 |
ANGTORIA "God Has a Plan For Us All" Em tempos recentes, parece que se as palavras “sinfónico” e “vocalista feminina” estiverem na descrição da mesma banda, as comparações a Nightwish são inevitáveis. Os Britânicos Angtoria não escapam ilesos às comparações, mas uma vez iniciada a audição do seu álbum “God Has a Plan For Us All” , percebemos facilmente que o campeonato é outro. Com Sara Jezebel Deva (Cradle of Filth, ex-Therion e ex-The Gathering) na voz, os Angtoria trazem-nos com esta excelente estreia uma sumptuosa obra de metal sinfónico que se esforça por escapar aos clichés. Com orquestrações ricas e suficientes momentos bombásticos, o álbum sai mais sinfónico que metal e ainda assim não deixa de ter guitarras em quantidade suficiente para apelar a quem acha que uma música só pode ser considerada metal se tiver guitarras (eu, por exemplo). E assim, em comparação com outras bandas que apresentam apontamentos sinfónicos aqui e ali, o trabalho de Angtoria é sinfónico do início ao fim, totalmente orquestral. Com isso em mente quaisquer comparações são possíveis mas se tomadas com uma pitada de sal. Num modo muito peculiar, as músicas entram-nos no ouvido. Não são particularmente melódicas nem muito “catchy”, mas quando os pormenores se revelam, há algo de grandioso que fica na cabeça, o que é o mesmo que dizer que as composições são bem construídas e inteligentes, mas não particularmente fáceis. Mas, para os pacientes, a recompensa que trazem é excelente. Alguns crescendos como em “Original Sin” são grandiosos e puxam-nos para dentro do álbum, mostrando-nos a grandiosidade negra das ideias que formam a estrutura do trabalho, ouvindo-se nesta música alguns sinistros guturais bem colocados, que são raros em todo o álbum. Este mantém-se sempre dramático e intenso, desde o início da imponente “I Am Calling” até ao delicioso final comovente de “That's What the Wise Lady Said” , composição etérea a mostrar que entre o lúgubre ainda há espaço para a beleza profunda, com deliciosas passagens de piano e um belo de um solo de guitarra. Efectivamente, trata-se de um trabalho mais sombrio que a concorrência. A história não é feliz e a Sarah consegue expressar claramente as emoções mais perturbadoras que assolam as letras (há quem diga que lhe falta emoção... ouçam melhor). Em “God Has a Plan For Us All” ou “Six Feet Under's Not Deep Enough” e “Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned ” não há nada de simpatico a ouvir. No seu papel, Sarah Jezebel além de conseguir ser emocional, surpreende por não puxar dos seus créditos operáticos que tão bem foi mostrando em Therion ou Cradle , optando por um timbre limpo e normal, escapando assim aos clichés do género e do seu próprio historial como vocalista de suporte que mostra ser capaz de enfrentar um álbum inteiro. Até este momento os Angtoria parecem ser bons candidatos para revelações do ano e God Has a Plan For Us All é uma estreia sólida capaz de lutar por um lugar entre os destaques deste ano. Conseguem escapar às comparações que qualquer mente menos imaginativa decidir fazer e dão-nos algo verdadeiramente muito suis generis. E para finalizar, uma palavra sobre a capa: lindíssima. Ao mesmo tempo sensual e perturbadora, com um grafismo intenso. Costuma dizer-se que não se pode julgar o livro pela capa, mas no caso de Angtoria , as cortinas têm tudo a haver com a carpete.
