Firewind "Allegiance" Boy, did I have great expectations about this album! Not only is Gus G. one of the most talented guitar players of the new generation, but he seems to have left everything behind to concentrate solely on his Firewind project. Not only that but this time the band brought in the great Apollo Papathanasio to fill-in behind the mic instead of Chitral Somapala. And I don’t want to badmouth Chitral or Stephen Fredrick since I love his work with Kinrick, but Apollo is one amazing singer. I love the man in Evil Masquerade and Time Requiem; fact is his strong and somewhat rough voice is quite characteristic and a definite plus to any band. Not only that, but the man can pull out some great melodic moments to go along with his more aggressive performance. In terms of melody, Apollo is really better than is predecessors and it’s somewhat thanks to it that Firewind’s music reaches a new level. So what do we get this time around? The album starts with the kick-ass “Allegiance”: great riffing and soloing from Gus, in a very strong opener with a level of aggression that sets the album apart from the happier, softer, side of common Power Metal. Measured in ball size, these guys have coconuts (granted: live performances must be somewhat difficult), and yet “Allegiance” features a very melodic chorus line. The same goes for “Insanity” and the amazing “Falling To Pieces”, one of the highlights of the album. I could call these choruses pure and simple AOR, so you know what you get: instant hooks. Still, each song packs a lot more punch than your typical AOR anthem, so those who like it heavier will delight at “Allegiance” for sure. Also packed with variety, “Allegiance” offers us some mid-tempo diamonds like “Breaking The Silence”, featuring a very catchy duet between Apollo and Tara (Would love to hear more from her), and then a couple of quasi ballads in the form of “Deliverance” with one hell of a chorus line. It’s in moments like these that Apollo totally fucking rules. And the ripping solo by Gus? Brilliant and an amazing song that I count amongst my favourite for 2006). Another sort of ballad is “The Essence”, quite catchy, yet not as grandiose as the previous one. In the between, we get the pummelling “Dreamchaser”, one of the great heavy-hitters of the album, followed by the instrumental and quite ethereal “Before the Storm”, showing Gus’ feeling and more contemplative side. Great. Ending the album we get a stunning rocker: “Where do we go from here?”. This music is so melodic, so catchy and memorable that the answer is readily available: to stardom. I was unfair by mentioning Apollo and Gus, for as the album unfolds, Marc Cross’ (At Vance, Helloween, Winter’s Bane) work becomes apparent and worthy of praise, much like the one made by Petro and Katsionis who gives us great soloing. And in terms of soloing, of course Gus G. shows just how great he is, with some moments of sheer brilliance. Could this be the line-up Firewind needed to reach their potential? I think so! And with not a single weak music in an album that comes out more melodic than your average Heavy Metal and stronger than your everyday AOR, Firewind actually deliver their best, most consistent and mature album so far. As a matter of fact, it’s a stunning “melodic” metal album. It would thus be quite unfair if “Allegiance” didn’t grant the band a well deserved place in the elite of Heavy/Power Metal. All those who still believe in Power Metal but are somewhat tired of the genre’s usual clichés and lack of freshness should try this one: You’ll be amazed! Firewind "Allegiance" Meu Deus, as expectativas que eu tinha para este álbum! Não só é o Gus G. um dos mais talentosos guitarristas da nova geração, mas parece ter colocado tudo de lado para se concentrar nesta banda. Não só isso, mas desta vez a banda apresenta-nos Apollo Papathanasio para ocupar o lugar de Chitral Somapala atrás do microfone. Eu não quero dizer mal do Chitral ou do Stephen Fredrick, já que adoro o trabalho do último em Kinrick, mas o Apollo é um cantor fantástico. Adoro o gajo em Evil Masquerade e Time Requiem; o facto é que a sua voz forte e ríspida é muito característica e um ponto alto em qualquer banda. E não só isso, como ele consegue sacar de alguns grandes momentos melódicos para complementar a sua performance mais agressiva. Em termos melódicos, ele é realmente melhor que os seus antecessores e é em parte graças a isso que a música de Firewind atinge aqui outro patamar. Portanto, o que é que recebemos desta vez? O álbum começa com o arrasador “Allegiance”: grandes riffs e solos de Gus, num início muito forte com um nível de agressão que separa o álbum do mais feliz e mais mole lado do Power. Medidos em tamanho das bolas, estes tipos têm cocos (OK, as actuações ao vivo têm de ser difíceis), e ainda assim “Allegiance” tem um coro muito melódico. O mesmo pode ser dito em relação a “Insanity” e a excelente “Falling To Pieces”, um dos destaques do álbum. Eu chamaria a estes coros apelativos AOR puro e simples, portanto sabem o que vão ouvir: ganchos instantâneos. E todavia, cada música tem muito mais potência que o vosso típico AOR, pelo que aqueles que gostam do seu metal mais pesado, vão deliciar-se com “Allegiance” de certeza. Também sendo um álbum variado, “Allegiance” dá-nos alguns diamantes mais lentos como “Breaking The Silence”, com um dueto muito melódico entre Apollo e Tara (gostava de ouvir mais coisas da jovem), e depois algumas quase-baladas, nomeadamente “Deliverance”, com um coro do caraças! É em momentos destes que o Apollo simplesmente parte tudo! E o solo alucinante do Gus? Brilhante, e uma música impressionante que é das minhas favoritas para 2006). Outra quase balada é “The Essence”, muito apelativa, mas não tão grandiosa como a anterior. Pelo meio temos “Dreamchaser”, um dos pesos-pesados do álbum, seguida da instrumental e etérea “Before The Storm”, mostrando-nos o lado mais contemplativo e o “feeling” do Gus. Excelente! A terminar o álbum temos uma rockada tremenda: “Where Do We Go From Here?”. Esta música é tão melódica, tão memorável e apelativa que a resposta está à nossa frente: para o estrelato. Fui injusto ao mencionar apenas o Apollo e o Gus, porque à medida que o álbum se desenrola, o trabalho de Marc Cross (Helloween, At Vance, Winter’s Bane) torna-se aparente e é digno de menção. A bateria é muito forte e imaginativa, nunca parecendo deter-se numa batida comum ou pobre. O trabalho de Petro e Bob Katsionis também é de se louvar, com Katsionis a sacar alguns bons solos. E em termos de solos, é claro que o Gus G. nos mostra quão bom é, com alguns momentos de brilhantismo puro. Poderá ser este o alinhamento que os Firewind precisavam para atingir as suas potencialidades? Penso que sim! E sem uma única música fraca num álbum mais melódico que o vosso típico Heavy Metal e mais pesado que o vosso AOR do dia-a-dia, os Firewind dão-nos o seu melhor, mais consistente e maduro trabalho até agora. Na verdade, é um estonteante álbum de metal “melódico”. Portanto seria tremendamente injusto se “Allegiance” não desse à banda um lugar bem merecido na elite do Heavy/Power Metal. Todos aqueles que ainda acreditam no Power Metal mas estão um pouco cansados dos clichés usuais do género e da falta de algo novo em anos recentes devem tentar este trabalho: ficarão maravilhados.
