Narnia - Course Of A Generation

Sempre um seguidor do trabalho dos Narnia, não encarava a banda como uma prioridade ou algo de excepcional dentro do panorama Power Metal, mesmo com o talento impressionante de Carljohan Grimmark na guitarra.

Mas desde o já distante “Enter The Gate” de 2006 a banda sofreu uma mudança de relevo com a saída do vocalista Christian Rivel e, sem demérito de Christian (Audiovision, DivineFire, Wisdom Call), Germán Pascual (Mind’s Eye) é um vocalista verdadeiramente colossal. Que grande surpresa!

Em conjunto com o vocalista, a própria música da banda se altera, e se Germán lembra vagamente Apollo Papathanasio, com algo de David Coverdale, os Firewind, At Vance e Masterplan são agora uma comparação muito válida com os Narnia. “Sail Around The World”, “When The Stars Are Falling”, “Kings Will Come”, “Rain” ou “Armageddon” são disso perfeitos exemplos, explosivas e intensamente melódicas, memoráveis e com melodias imediatamente entranháveis. Contudo, as tendências neoclássicas neoclássicas não são tão notórias e o álbum é inquestionavelmente mais pesado, sombrio, que o antecipado.

Destaque também para uma vertente instrumental impressionante e endiabrada, não só na secção rítmica com os muito competentes Olsson e Johansson, mas também com Carljohan Grimmark a mostrar-se monstruoso na guitarra, com uma verdadeira muralha sonora de riffs cortantes e sólidos como aço a voarem na nossa direcção, muito adequados a um álbum que é menos obviamente Cristão que os precedentes, apresentando-nos letras mais diversas e neutras. Excelente.

Tudo junto, “Course Of A Generation” mostra uns Narnia profundamente revitalizados e energéticos, e uma colecção de músicas impressionantes cuja qualidade será muito difícil negar. Poderoso, energético, dinâmico, uma verdadeira pérola de metal melódico, parece-me francamente o melhor conseguido álbum da carreira da banda e sem dúvida alguma vale a pena ser ouvido.

A usual follower of Narnia’s work, I still didn’t regard the band as a priority or something exceptional within Power Metal, even with Carl Johan Grimmark’s impressive guitar playing.

But since the already distant “Enter The Gate” from 2006, the band suffered a very relevant change with the departure of long-time singer Christian Rivel and, without bashing Christian (Audiovision, DivineFire, Wisdom Call), Germán Pascual (Mind’s Eye) is a colossal singer. What a huge surprise there!

Together with the singer, the music itself has changed and, if Germán reminds me of Apollo Papathanasio with a bit of David Coverdale, Firewind, At Vance and Masterplan are now a very valid comparison with Narnia. “Sail Around The World”, “When The Stars Are Falling”, “Kings Will Come”, “Rain” or “Armageddon” are perfect examples of that, explosive and intensively melodic, memorable with melodies that will stick right away. The neoclassical elements are nonetheless more subdued and the album is unquestionably heavier and darker than anticipated.

I should also point out the very impressive and dynamic instrumentals, not only with the very competent Olsson and Johansson in the rhythm section, but also Carl Johan Grimmark doing a titanic guitar work, with a veritable sound wall of sharp and steel-solid riffing thrown at you, all quite adequate to an album that is less openly Christian than its predecessors, presenting us with more diverse and neutral lyrics. Excelent.

All together, “Course Of A Generation” shows Narnia profoundly revitalized and energetic, and a collection of impressive songs with a hard to deny quality. Powerful, energetic, dynamic, a true Melodic Metal gem, it appears to me as the band’s most well achieved album so far, and one that is certainly worthy of getting.
