Zandelle - Flames Of Rage

Quis o destino que pudesse avaliar ao mesmo tempo tanto os Zandelle quanto os Cage, e não poderia ficar mais grato, já que ambas as bandas representam do melhor que se faz nos EUA em termos de Power Metal puro e tradicional, de influência Europeia como deve ser, e ambos os conjuntos surgem aqui com dois lançamentos dignos de destaque.

Entre as mudanças de alinhamento e de editoras, os Zandelle não têm sido a mais afortunada banda, mas espero que isso mude agora, já que dificilmente poderiam encontrar uma editora melhor para a sua sonoridade que a Pure Steel Records, que parece ter um orgulho confesso em defender o metal mais tradicional.

E é precisamente isso que nos oferece “Flames Of Rage” com muito claras referências a Iron Maiden, Gamma Ray ou Judas Priest, mas também uma grande posta de Manowar, e uma colecção de composições velozes e energéticas, mas também épicas, que não se deixam prender a repetições. Uma secção rítmica eloquente, riffs imponentes e vocalizações repletas de coros memoráveis, aliam-se a temas poderosos para criar um álbum inesquecível e marcante.

O seu ponto forte não é a velocidade que possui em quantidade (veja-se o início com a fenomenal “Killing Gaze” ou “Flames Of Rage”), ou a melodia que também abunda, mas o carácter quase progressivo de composições muito bem escritas, os momentos teatrais e épicos em que se cria grandiloquência e tensão capaz de transbordar a qualquer momento. Veja-se o caso de “Inner Strength” que começa com um cântico orgulhoso para desembocar num hino guerreiro capaz de dar tesão a qualquer fã de Manowar. O mesmo vale para “Face Of War” com os seus riffs ponderosos. Mas se todo o álbum transpira epicidade e espírito guerreiro, poucas composições o expressam melhor que a grandiosa “Thermopylae” ou a fabulosa “Eradicated Existence”, orgulhosa do topo dos seus quase 22 minutos de duração que exemplificam muito bem toda a riqueza presente em “Flames Of Rage”: a composição muda de velocidade, salta entre atmosferas, oscila entre o heróico e o melancólico e cria momentos memoráveis e inesperados.
 
“Flames Of Rage” não é apenas um álbum demolidor, mas muito possivelmente o melhor da carreira dos Zandelle e faz-nos desejar que não voltem a passar-se três anos até um novo trabalho, porque estes Norte-Americanos têm algo realmente muito poderoso na sua música. Sem dúvida essencial e inquestionavelmente um álbum de que só somos dignos de ouvir com ambos os punhos no ar.

Fate had me reviewing at the same time both Zandelle and Cage, and I couldn’t feel better about it, since both bands represent some of the best music currently being made in the USA in terms of pure, unadulterated Power Metal of European influence, the way it should be, and both bands celebrate 2009 with albums worthy of note.

Between the lineup and label changes, Zandelle haven’t been the most fortunate band, but I hope that will change now, since they could hardly find a better label for their sound than Pure Steel Records, a label that seems to take great pride in upholding traditional metal.

And that’s exactly what “Flames Of Rage” has in store for us, with clear references to Iron Maiden, Gama Ray or Judas Priest, but a great slab of Manowar too and a great lineup of fast and energetic songs, which are also epic, not falling into repetitions. An eloquent rhythm section, imposing riffing, and vocal lines filled with memorable choruses join forces with powerful themes to create an unforgettable album.

Its strong point though, isn’t the speed it has in large quantities (take a listen to the phenomenal “Killing Gaze” or “Flames Of Rage”), or the melody that also abounds, but the almost progressive character of very well written songs, the theatrical and epic moments where the band creates grandiloquence and tension about to overflow. That’s just the case with “Inner Strength”, starting out as a proud chant to suddenly become a warrior hymn capable of giving a hard-on to any Manowar fan. The same goes for “Face Of War” and its ponderous riffing. But if the whole album exhales epic spirit, few songs express it so perfectly as the grand “Thermopylae” or the fabulous “Eradicated Existence”, proudly standing at nearly 22 minutes long and exemplifying very well all the wealth present in “Flames Of Rage”: the song changes speed, jumps between atmospheres, alternating between the heroic and the melancholic to create memorable and unexpected moments.

“Flames Of Rage” isn’t just a kick-ass album, but quite possibly Zandelle’s best so far and it makes you wish this time around we won’t have to wait another three years before their next album because these Americans certainly have something very powerful in their music. Undoubtedly essential and unquestionably an album you’re only worthy of listening to with both your fists up in the air.
