Masterplan - Time To Be King

Ainda quente nas prateleiras, “Time To Be King” marca o regresso do carismático Jorn Land ao seio dos Masterplan. Se para uns, Lande é dos melhores vocalistas da actualidade, para outros é simplesmente o melhor, com uma mistura muito característica entre David Coverdale e um Ronnie James Dio que jamais será esquecido. Contudo, tendo em conta o calibre do seu antecessor, “MKII”, onde Mike DiMeo só terá desagradado aos mais acérrimos fãs do gigante vocal Norueguês, “Time To Be King” tem de ser engolido com uma pitada de sal.

Claro que a entrada de Lande representa uma mais-valia em si mesma, mas em termos musicais não encontramos nada que realmente exceda “MKII”, o que não é nem bom, nem mau: os Masterplan são os Masterplan e jogam no seu próprio campeonato. “Time To Be King” apresenta-os em top de forma, com arranjos poderosos, secção rítmica trovejante e guitarras sempre prontas para soltarem um solo magnífico, não fosse este um conjunto de músicos consumados. Sonoramente, as composições são “cheias”, pesadas, francamente poderosas, até intrincadas no jogo constante entre cada instrumento, uma intercomunicação que chega a ter laivos de grandioso.

O que torna este álbum especial é mesmo um conjunto de temas que não são simplesmente boas, mas nos atiram ao chão de tão marcantes que são, começando com a energética “Fiddler Of Time”, “Far From The End Of The World” com o tipo de refrão de levar qualquer fã às lágrimas e que só um homem como Jorn Land conseguiria levar a um nível só seu. A sua linha vocal em crescendo em “Time To Be King” também é digna de nota, enquanto “The Sun Is In Your Hands” é um pura dinamite e “Blue Europa” nos dá a passagem mais emotiva de Jorn num tema repleto de elementos progressivos e inesquecível.

Com uma primeira parte arrasadora, é apenas pena que “Time To Be King” nos apresente uma segunda parte onde alguns temas não mantêm o nível. É contudo um álbum em que a aposta no regresso de Lande está ganha, não apenas porque, mas porque é difícil imaginar a qualidade de alguns temas com qualquer outro vocalista. Este é um álbum perto do extraordinário que irá agradar soberbamente aos fãs de qualquer uma das fases desta banda e se ainda não estão familiarizados com o seu trabalho, têm aqui uma oportunidade de ouro para se apaixonarem.

Still hot on the shelves, “Time To Be King” marks the return of charismatic Jorn Lande to Masterplan. If for some Lande is one of the best singers of today, to others he is simply the best, with a very characteristic blend of David Coverdale and the never to be forgotten Ronnie James Dio, great among the greatest. Still, and taking into consideration just how good “MKII”  was, with Mike DiMeo not winning over only the fiercest fans of the Norwegian vocal giant, “Time To Be King” must be taken with a bit of salt.

Of course Lande’s return is added value in itself, but in musical terms there nothing here to really exceed “MKII”, which is neither good nor bad: Masterplan are Masterplan and they play in their own championship. “Time To Be King” presents them in top form, with powerful arrangements, a thundering rhythm section and guitars always ready to unleash a magnificent solo, or we wouldn’t be talking about a consecrated group of musicians. In sonic terms, songs are “full”, heavy, honestly powerful, even elaborate in the constant interplay between all instruments, an intercommunication that reaches heights of grandeur.

What makes this a special album is indeed the handful of songs that exceed the merely good but will have you on your knees, so memorable that they are, beginning with the energetic “Fiddler Of Time”, “Far From The End Of The World” with the type of chorus that will bring any fan to tears and only a man like Jorn Land could take to a level of his own. His crescendo vocal line is also noteworthy in “Time To Be King”, while “The Sun Is In Your Hands” is pure dynamite and “Blue Europa” gives us one of Lande’s most emotive passages in a song filled with progressive hints.
With a first half frankly devastating, it’s just a minor shame that “Time To Be King” proceeds to a second half where some songs don’t maintain the same level. It’s nonetheless an album where the bet on bringing Lande back pays off, not just because, but because it’s hard to imagine the quality of some songs with any other singer. This is one album very close to the extraordinary that will really please all of the band’s fans, and those who aren’t yet familiarized with their work have a golden opportunity to get to know them and falling in love.
