Entrevista : Tankard
No negócio da produção de Thrash Metal de topo há quase três décadas, da música dos Germânicos Tankard poder-se-ia justamente dizer que nunca secou nem perdeu a espuma. Com o seu mais recente álbum, “Thirst”, a chegar às prateleiras no dia 19 de Dezembro, a RHL considerou estar na altura apropriada para apanhar a banda e conversar sobre uma carreira que deixou atrás de si um invejável rastro de barris secos, com o vocalista Andreas “Gerre” Geremia numa entrevista agradavelmente informal.

1 RHL: Gerre, começaria por te agradecer pelo teu tempo e dar os parabéns a ti e à banda pelo “Thirst”. Sem contar com os álbuns ao vivo, demos e compilações, este é o vosso 13º álbum: sentem-se com sorte?
Gerre – Obrigado pelos cumprimentos! Então estamos realmente satisfeitos de momento, ansiosos pelo lançamento e pelas próximas actividades ao vivo.
2 RHL: Como correu o processo de gravação?
Gerre – Trabalhamos bastante no pequeno estúdio do Andy (n.t.: Gutjahr, guitarra) e sentimos a pressão da falta de tempo. Mas precisamos mesmo desta pressão para escrever bom material!
3 RHL: Agrada-me como os vossos álbuns balançam o vosso famigerado humor com temas mais sérios. Mas depois ouço “When Daddy Comes To Play”. Esta composição é bastante única nos Tankard, especialmente com a inclusão de coros. Soa como se quisessem que esta música realmente se destacasse?
Gerre – Não o queríamos verdadeiramente, mas esta musical realmente destaca-se. O Olaf (n.t.: Zissel, bateria) escreveu-a e eu estava algo céptico no início, mas agora realmente adoro esta música. As letras encaixam mesmo na música e a ideia do Andy de deixar as crianças cantarem foi excelente. Uma composição muito séria…
4 RHL: Com o álbum ainda indisponível para compra, podes falar um pouco de quais são os principais temas nas letras de “Thirst”?
Gerre – Nós tentamos fazer uma boa mistura entre material com humor e material sério. Por exemplo, “Octane Warriors” é sobre guerras futuras devidas à falta de petróleo, “Echoes Of Fear” é sobre ver guerra na televisão, “Sexy Feet Under” é sobre um fetichista de pés, “Myevilfart” sobre farpas cheirosas, etc.
5 RHL: Vocês já passaram a marca dos 35 anos, tendo-se formado em 1982. Como pioneiros e um dos maiores nomes do Thrash Europeu, como vêem a evolução e mudanças que durante estes anos sofreram o mundo da música e o Thrash? Que pensas do estado do Thrash hoje em dia, com todas as bandas clássicas ainda em actividade e a aparente ressurgência do género?
Gerre – Sim, o Thrash Metal estava realmente morto do meio ao final dos anos 90. Hoje em dia temos uma espécie de nova onda do Thrash e especialmente para as velhas bandas como os Tankard, é muito bom juntarmo-nos a isso. Nunca desistimos e mantivemos o nosso estilo, pelo que estamos algo orgulhosos por ainda cá andarmos!
6 RHL: Bem, e ao mesmo tempo os Tankard são uma das mais regulares bandas da sua “geração”: apesar das mudanças lineup, estas foram mínimas por comparação com outras bandas (o vosso alinhamento actual tem 8 anos, certo?) e lançam um CD a cada dois anos, sem perderem o interesse. Qual é o vosso segredo?
Gerre – Nos os 4 estamos juntos há quase 11 anos, e já parece uma pequena família! O nosso segredo: ainda nos divertimos imenso a tocar e somos realmente independentes, porque todos temos empregos regulares e não precisamos das boas vendas ou centenas de concertos. Assim somos completamente livres e podemos fazer o que podemos!
7 RHL: Então o vosso emprego é cansativo e é por isso que esperam pelo fim da semana quando vocês e os vossos amigos vão ao “Diner’s Rum”, uma comunidade de bebedores onde pagam uma quota mensal… parece-me que se torna cada vez mais complicado ganhar-se a vida com a música, então entendo que todos vocês tenham empregos regulares. Como é que isso impacta no modo como gerem a carreira musical?
Gerre – Nós investimos todo o nosso tempo livre nas actividades da banda, pelo que julgo que isto é suficiente. Ainda tocamos 25-30 concertos por ano, nada mau, parece-me.
8 RHL: E que fazem então para ganhar a vida, se posso perguntar?
Gerre – Eu trabalho como assistente social com toxicodependentes, o Frank (n.t.: Thorwarth, baixo) e o Olaf trabalham com automóveis e o Andy é engenheiro.
9 RHL: Gerre, comparado com o rapaz esparto e elegante da capa de “Thirst”… tens andado a negligenciar os teus deveres de adorador de cerveja? Seriamente: têm uma cerveja favorita ou pela altura em que chegam a uma conclusão já beberam demais para se lembrarem da resposta posteriormente?
Gerre – A nossa cerveja favorita é sempre a que nos servirem no clube em que tocarmos. A propósito, essa é a única razão para manter a banda: viajar pelo mundo e beber cervejas diferentes.
10 RHL: Loiras ou morenas (cervejas, claro!)?
Gerre – Ambas, claro!
RHL: Lata ou… tankard (n.t.: “caneca”)?
Gerre – Tankard! Eu prefiro cerveja de barril!
11 RHL: Há alguma má altura para beber cerveja ou isso é mito?
Gerre – É claro que é mito! (risos)
12 RHL: Se não tem álcool… é cerveja?
Gerre – Que pergunta: claro que não!
13 RHL: Beberias cerveja sem álcool se tivesses água mineral apontada à garganta?
Gerre – Eu nunca bebo água mineral!
14 RHL: Foi uma grande pena não terem vindo a Portugal este ano; eu e os rapazes já planeávamos em beber uma rodada (à vossa custa se possível, mas esquece que disse isso), e estamos sempre a gabar-nos coo a nossa cerveja derruba gigantes (e retretes portáteis com eles…). Como estão os vossos planos de digressão para o futuro?
Gerre – Nós tocamos sempre tanto quanto podemos, indo à Finlândia já em Março pela primeira vez, tocando bastantes festivais de Verão e esperamos mesmo ir a Portugal!
15 RHL: Última oportunidade de trazer alguma dignidade de volta para a entrevista: há alguma questão que nunca te tenha sido colocada e desejes uma oportunidade de lhe responder?
Gerre – Jamais me perguntaram sobre as minhas anteriores actividades como estrela porno. Posso dizer-te: foram tempos de dureza…
16 RHL: Dignidade restaurada… Bem, a cerveja está a morrer, o charuto a fumar-se a ele mesmo e é altura de encerrar esta entrevista. Obrigado pela oportunidade, e tens alguma mensagem final para os vosso fãs em Portugal, força!

In the business of creating top notch Thrash Metal for almost three decades, of Germany’s Tankard it could justly be said their music was never dry or stale. With their latest album, “Thirst”, hitting the shelves on December 19th, we at RHL thought it the perfect time to catch up with the band and talk about a keg conquering career with the vocalist Andreas “Gerre” Geremia, in a pleasantly informal interview.

RHL: Gerre, I’d begin by thanking you for your time and congratulating you and the band for “Thirst”. Counting out live albums, demos and compilations, this is your 13th full-length album: do you guys feel lucky?
Gerre – Thanks for the compliments! So, we are really satisfied at the moment, looking forward for the release and the next live activities.
RHL: How did the recording process go?
Gerre – We worked a lot at Andy’s (n.t.: Gutjahr, guitars) little studio and had time pressure as always. But we really need this pressure to write good stuff!!!!
RHL: I like how your albums always balance your renowned humor with more serious stuff. But then I listen to “When Daddy Comes To Play”. This later song is rather unique in Tankard, especially with the inclusion of choirs. Sounds like you wanted to make this song really stand out?
Gerre – We didn`t really want it, but this song really stands out. Olaf (n.t.: Zissel, drums) wrote this song and I was a little skeptic at the beginning, but now I really love this song. The lyrics really fit to the music and Andy’s idea to let the children sing was great. A very serious song…
RHL: With the album still not available for sale, can you talk a bit about what are the main subjects in the lyrics for “Thirst”?
Gerre – We did try to do a good mixture of funny and serious stuff. For example “Octane Warriors” is about future wars because of less oil, “Echoes of Fear” is about watching war on TV, “Sexy Feet Under” about a foot fetishist, “Myevilfart” about nice smelling farts, etc.
RHL: You guys have already passed the 25 years mark, having gathered in 1982. As pioneers and one of the grandest names in the European Thrash scene, how do you see the evolution and the changes the music business and Thrash itself have gone through throughout the years? What do you think of the state of Thrash today, with all the classic bands still in action and the genre’s apparent resurgence?
Gerre – Yeah, thrash metal was really dead in the middle until the end of the nineties. Nowadays we have something like a new thrash metal wave and especially for the old bands like Tankard it is great to join this. We never gave up and kept our style, so we are a little bit proud to still be here!!!!!!
RHL: Well, at the same time Tankard are one of the most regular bands of its “generation” : you’ve had some lineup changes through the years, but these can be considered minimum by comparison with other bands (your current lineup is now 8 years old, right?) and you put out a CD every two years at least, never really going stale. What’s your secret?
Gerre – We 4 have been together for nearly 11 years, and it feels really like a little family!!! Our secret: we still have a lot of fun to play and we are really independent, because we all have regular jobs and don’t need good sales or hundreds of concerts. So we are totally free and can do what we want!!!!!
RHL: So your job’s exhausting, and that’s why you wait for the end of the week when you and your buddies go to the “Diner’s Rum”, a booze-drinking community where you pay a monthly fee… I think it’s getting harder for everybody to earn a living with music, so I understand you guys all have regular jobs. How does that impact on the way you manage your musical career?
Gerre – We put all our free time into the activities of the band, so I think this is really enough, we still play 25-30 shows a year, not bad I guess.
RHL: What do you guys do for a living right now, if I may ask?
Gerre – I work as a social worker with drug addicted people, Frank (n.t.: Thorwarth, bass) and Olaf have to do with cars and Andy is an engineer!
RHL: Gerre, compared to the smart, elegant fellow on the cover artwork of “Thirst”… have you been neglecting your beer worshiping duties? Seriously: do you have a favorite beer or by the time you reach a decision you drank too much to remember what it was afterwards?
Gerre – Our favorite beer is always that one we get served at the club we play. That`s the only reason for keeping the band by the way: travelling around the world and taste the different beers!
RHL: Blondes or brunettes (I’m talking beer!)?
Gerre – Both, of course!!!!
RHL: Cans or… tankards?
Gerre – Tankards. I prefer a draft one!!!!
RHL: Is there a bad occasion for drinking beer, or is that a myth?
Gerre – Of course it’s a myth! (laughter)
RHL: Is alcohol-free beer… beer?
Gerre – What a question: of course not!!!!!!!
RHL: Would you drink it if mineral water would be pointed at your throat?
Gerre – I don`t drink mineral water anyway!
RHL: It was a dear shame you couldn’t come to Portugal this year; me and the guys were already planning on drinking a round (at your expense if possible, but forget I said that), and we always brag about how our beer brings down giants (and porta-potties with them…). How are your touring plans for the near future?
Gerre – We play as much as we can, going to Finland in March for the very first time, playing a lot of festivals in Summer and really hope to go to Portugal!!!!!
RHL: Last chance to bring some dignity back into this interview: is there any question that was never posed to you that you have been waiting for a chance to answer to?
Gerre – Nobody asked me about my former activities as a porno star, I really can tell you: this was a HARD time…
RHL: That’s dignity restored… Well, the beer is getting stale, the cigar is smoking itself, and it’s time to wrap up this interview. Thank you so much for this opportunity, and if you have any final messages to your fans over in Portugal, be my guest!
Gerre – Thanks a lot for your support for more than 26 years. Thrash metal will never die and we really would love to go back to Portugal!!!! Cheers!!!!
